Challenge for Biblical Women: K(No)w Soft Theology
If you are a woman who grew up in church, or even if you didn't but you attend faithfully now, you are probably used to having gone to at least one Women's Bible study. These are often great times of fellowship, fruitful prayer and going over God's word together that I cherish.
I have noticed though that we women are too often "soft" with our theology. Sure, we know the Proverbs 31 woman and we strive to be her--as we should--but too often that's where we leave it. We can be guilty of being a Martha;solely focusing on serving and meeting the physical needs of others, but neglecting to sit at the feet of Jesus and thus meet our own spiritual needs. How can this be?
We tend to compartmentalize and think that theology is for the men of the church-the pastors, elders, deacons and sunday school teachers-but not for us. But how wrong we are. To live life as a Christian is to see the world through the lens of scripture.
But what if we don't know the scripture? How can we share the Gospel with a loved one if we really aren't sure what the Gospel even is? How can we counsel a suicidal friend if we don't know what God's word says on suffering and discouragement? How can we combat anxiety, depression and fear if we have never read the deep truths found in Philippians and Colossians on who Christ is and the peace He offers? How can I explain to my atheist coworkers why I think their worldview is foolish and mine isn't? How can I lay my head on my pillow at night and rest in God's sovereignty over the human heart if I haven't read Romans lately? How do I know how to handle my finances if I have never even read a passage on money because it was never in my Bible reading plan? We have to have some personal and corporate initiative.
Theology matters. It is not left to the seminary students and pastors. We are all theologians. We are just not all correct in knowing who God is.
Psalm 119:11 tells us to hide God's word in our heart so that we may not sin against him. How can we love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength if we don't know His word? To know His word is to know Him. There is no other way. Do not settle for soft theology.
